Plastic-Free Future

A thought-provoking talk on ‘Plastic-Free Future’ was organized on 7 May 2025 for students of Classes VI to VIII, offering them an inspiring opportunity to engage with two distinguished change makers—Mr. Prabjhot Sodhi, Senior Program Director for Circular Economy at the Centre for Environment Education, and Mr. Hem Kumar Pande, Chairman, Salwan Public School, Rajendra Nagar, a veteran civil servant, renowned environmental policy expert, and former Secretary to the Government of India. The event was also attended by Major General Sanjeev Shukla, VSM (Retd), Director, Mrs. Priyanka Barara, Principal, and Mrs. Jyotsna Grover, Vice- Principal.
The session commenced with a PowerPoint presentation by students, showcasing the school’s ongoing environmental initiatives such as tree plantations, waste management through Aerobins, e-waste and paper recycling, and the flagship Plastic-Free Drive. These efforts highlighted the school’s strong commitment to sustainability and eco-conscious living.
Mr. Prabjhot Sodhi delivered an engaging and informative talk covering a wide range of topics including waste segregation, plastic packaging techniques, the harmful impact of microplastics like lint, and the dual nature of plastic as both a necessity and a threat. He also emphasized water conservation through the use of aerators. His presentation, enriched with curated videos and real-life examples, captured the students’ interest and deepened their understanding of environmental challenges.
He further shared impactful anecdotes from his collaborations with leading corporations like Coca-Cola, Hindustan Unilever, and HDFC Bank. Notably, in partnership with Mr. Hem Kumar Pande, he spearheaded a plastic recycling initiative that led to the conservation of crude oil worth ₹180 crore—an exemplary demonstration of how innovative practices can yield significant environmental and economic benefits.
Concluding the event, Mr. Hem Kumar Pande addressed the students, emphasizing the importance of sustained environmental awareness and responsibility. He encouraged the young learners to carry forward the momentum of the Plastic-Free Drive with renewed enthusiasm and active participation.
The event proved to be an eye-opener for the students, motivating them to become conscious, informed, and proactive stewards of the environment.
