Heritage & History

Leveraging a Legacy…

The Salwan Education Trust (SET) is a name greatly revered in the field of education. SET was established in the year 1941 at Peshawar by Late Pandit Girdhari Lal Salwan, a great patriot who dedicated his life to the service of the nation. A man of exceptional courage and dynamism, he became the Saviour and Messiah for thousands of refugees during the partition of India and Pakistan. Today, 8 educational institutions under the aegis of the Trust are constantly striving for Nation Building with an unparalleled zeal. Upholding the vision and philosophy of its founder, Pt. Girdhari Lal Salwan, the Trust has established unprecedented landmarks in the field of Education over the last 80 years.

Late Pt. Girdhari Lal Salwan, the founder of SET, was born in 1902. He was a great visionary who vowed to impart education to the needy – from all sections of the society – free of cost. He thereby laid the foundation of Salwan Education Trust in 1941.

Through the Salwan Sanatan Dharam High School for Boys and Salwan Sanatan Dharam High School for Girls, which came into being in 1942 in Peshawar, he realized his dream of providing Education for All. The Salwan Boys School (1949), Salwan Girls School (1952) and Salwan Public School (1953) in New Delhi are the result of his commitment towards providing education to the children of resurgent India in the Post-Independence Era. He devoted his life towards the welfare and upliftment of the less fortunate.

A man of great foresight, Pt. G.L. Salwan conceptualized the idea of sharing of facilities and resources between Public Schools and the schools for the underprivileged. This beautiful Public – Private Partnership guarantees optimum utilization of resources in the three Salwan Schools at Rajendra Nagar Campus.

Today, 8 schools are being run successfully under the aegis of Salwan Education Trust.

The Beginning — Peshawar, 1941

In 1941, Late Pandit Girdhari Lal Salwan founded the Salwan Education Trust in Peshawar with a singular belief: education is the most powerful tool for social upliftment. His vision — “Education for All” — was radical in its simplicity. Not education for the privileged few, but education as a right, a pathway to dignity and purpose for every child.

Partition & A New Beginning

The Partition of 1947 displaced millions. The Salwan family was forced to leave behind everything they had built. But a vision cannot be left behind. The Trust re-established itself in Delhi, and the Rajendra Nagar campus became proof that a commitment to education could survive even the deepest fractures of history.

A Life of Purpose and Inspiration

“The great work Salwan Sahib has done in the cause of education has made me very happy. This monumental work will confer immortality on him.”

Mission

Our aim is to groom self-directed, confident learners empowered with skills, knowledge and wisdom through well-rounded education. We aspire to ignite in our students a passion for lifelong learning and the zeal to serve the society.

Vision

Nurturing empowered citizens, having universal values, to serve the society and Nation

Service Before Self

These three words are not simply a motto inscribed on a crest. They are a living practice woven into the daily life of every student, teacher, and staff member. From SEWA community service programmes to leadership opportunities that ask young people to put collective good ahead of personal gain, “Service Before Self” shapes how we learn, lead, and grow.

The Rising Sun

The Salwan logo — The Rising Sun — is “a manifestation of the school’s cherished philosophy of ‘Service Before Self.’” Just as the sun rises each day to give light without expectation of return, it reminds our community that true greatness lies in what we give, not what we receive.

Our Ethos — What Defines Us

  • Through SEWA initiatives, community outreach, and civic engagement, students learn that education carries a responsibility to give back.

  • We hold ourselves to the highest standards in academics, the arts, and character — striving not for perfection, but for our personal best.

  • Curiosity is encouraged at every turn, with classrooms and labs designed to let students question, experiment, and create.

  • An 80-year legacy of values-led education grounds everything we do, connecting today's students to a proud Salwan tradition.

  • Students grow into thoughtful, responsible citizens who understand their place in an interconnected world.

  • We nurture the whole child — intellect, body, creativity, and well-being — so every student grows in balance.

Leadership & Messages

Chairman’s Message

Shri Hem Kumar Pande, IAS (Retd), Chairman, at his desk

It is indeed a privilege to be part of Salwan Public School (SPS) ecosystem. Interactions, so far have been virtual only, as we are in the midst of a pandemic. Looking forward to a better time for the entire humanity, as this shall also pass.

Logo of the school, the Rising Sun, spreads hope and in a short time, since I became a member of the distinguished SPS family, there has been ample evidence of “Service before Self”, by one and all members of the SPS. What ultimately matters in a dynamic world is the integrity and ethos of an institution. The DNA that SPS ecosystem has inherited is there for all of us to work further in providing holistic education to its users.

May the light of knowledge remove the darkness of ignorance (तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय), is a true prayer, whose cause our institution espouses not only in letter but also in spirit. Let us all come together to take it forward, to enable SPS, in creating a human resource that makes us all proud of.

Shri Hem Kumar Pande, IAS (Retd)

Our strong academic thrust is supplemented with providing direction and guidance to young learners to understand the changing social values, norms and societal pressures, so that they may take informed decisions.

Our endeavour is to nurture moral and intellectual leaders, individuals with dignity, integrity and compassion who want to make a positive difference in the world.

Maj. Gen. Sanjeev Shukla, VSM (Retd.)

Principal’s Message

Smt. Priyanka Barara, Principal, at her desk

“Education is not learning of facts rather it is the training of the mind to think.”

— Albert Einstein

At Salwan Public school, we believe that education is a revolution, a constant journey of discovery and rediscovery that should move with the moving times. Change is a constant, a requirement and a necessity. With our endeavours directed towards focussing on evolving pedagogical practices, we hope to bring in this revolution as a wave of new learning and fresh ideas into our community.

A New India is emerging, a country that is transitioning, growing, innovating and striving towards excellence. It is our responsibility as educators to reflect and adapt to the new challenges of this New India and provide a nourishing and nurturing environment to the inheritors, partakers and caretakers of a rich heritage.

Our school is an ecosystem that creates in children a thirst for knowledge, that stems from a love for learning and a quest of betterment. Our able team of educators creates mindsets that look beyond rote learning. The need of the hour is to adopt a holistic approach to education that encourages children to be well rounded, sensitive, aware and intelligent citizens of tomorrow.

Every child is unique, bright and gifted and it is our responsibility to encourage their individuality and talents in every field. Let us together help them embark upon this journey of learning, that shall forever inspire them to think, reflect and act.
